Browse Power BI Report in Power BI Report Server

  1. Open the Power BI Report Server Web Portal.
  2. You will find the published report.
  3. Click on the report name to open.

Configure Power BI Report Server Step by Step

Once the Power BI Report Server installation is complete, you will be ready to configure the Power BI Report Server by clicking on Configure Report Server button. When you click on the Configure Report Server button, you will be asked to connect to the Report Server.


In this section, specify a server name and select a report server instance to configure.


Configure the Power BI Report Server Service Account

  1. Provide the service account that will be used to run the Report Server service. (It’s recommended to use Network Service as a built-in account or a domain account)
  2. Click Apply to configure Power BI Report Server Service Account.


Configure the Power BI Report Server Web Service

  1. Provide the virtual directory name and the port as you prefer. or leave the default values.
  2. Click Apply to configure the Power BI Report Server Web Service URL. (Please make sure that the task is completed successfully)


Configure the Power BI Report Server Database

Before configuring the Power BI Report Server Database, you must make sure that you have a ready SQL Server instance with Database Engine installed.


  1. If the SQL Server instance is ready, click on Change Database button.
  2. Follow the Database Creation wizard, Check Create a new report server database then click Next.
  3. Connect to the database server by providing the SQL Server Instance that will host the Power BI database or the authentication type as you prefer.
  4. Provide an existing account that the Power BI service will use to connect to the Power BI Report Server database.
  5. Review the summary and click Next.
  6. Wait for a moment until the database creation is finished.


Configure the Power BI Report Server Web Portal

  1. Provide the virtual directory name and the port as you prefer. or leave the default values.
  2. Click Apply to configure the Web Portal URL.
  3. Once the web portal is configured, browse the web portal URL to make sure that the web portal is working properly.


Backup the Power BI Report Server Encryption keys

To encrypt the sensitive data in the report server database like connection strings, credentials, you should take a backup of the symmetric key. (The symmetric key backup is very significant mainly when you are planning to migrate or move to another Power BI Report Server)

Create & Publish Report in Power BI Report Server using Power BI Desktop

Create

  1. Launch Microsoft Power BI Desktop.
  2. Build your report as you prefer.


Publish

  1. Go to File > Save As > Power BI Report Server.
  2. Specify the Report Server (Web Portal) URL for the Power BI Report Server.
  3. Specify the Power BI Report Name.
  4. Click Save to save The Report to Power BI Report Server.
  5. The report has been published to Power BI Report Server Properly.

Missing Save To Power BI Report Server In Power BI Desktop




Download & Install Power BI Desktop for Power BI Report Server

Download

  1. Open Power BI Report Server Web Portal URL.
  2. Click on Download.
  3. Click on Power BI Desktop.
  4. Or use this Direct Link to download Power BI Desktop.
  5. Check PBIDesktopRS.msi (if your computer is running 32-bit) or PBIDesktopRS_x64.msi (if your computer is running 64-bit), next to download it.


Install

  1. Double click on the downloaded file to install the Power BI Desktop.
  2. Accept the terms, then click Next.
  3. Specify the installation folder, click Next.
  4. Check create a desktop shortcut, then Click on Install.
  5. Wait for a moment till the Power BI Desktop is installed.
  6. Once the installation is finished, Click Finish.

Embed Power BI in your product for your customers (Installation)

SETUP

  1. Browse Microsoft Power BI Embedded Analytics Playground (Preview).
  2. Go to Get up and running with Power BI embedded analytics section and click Start setting up your environment.
  3. Click Embed for your customers.
  4. Sign in your Power BI account.
  5. Enter the Application Name. (Don't use the sensitive keyword likes Power BI)
  6. Select the API access for the account.
  7. Click Register.
  8. Enter the workspace name. (Recommended use the department name or others group name)
  9. Click Create Workspace.
  10. You may use the Sample Power BI report for testing otherwise click Skip.
  11. Click Grant permissions.


WHERE TO GET THE ID

Application ID:

  1. Sign in to the Azure Portal.
  2. Go to App registrations.
  3. Look for the Application Name you named to get the Application ID.


Workspace ID:

  1. Sign in to the Power BI.
  2. Click on Workspaces and click on the workspace you named.
  3. You can get the Workspace ID from URL. (Example: https://app.powerbi.com/groups/d915b4f2-cafe-4d00-9f4b-9482616064d3/list)


Report ID/Dashboard ID:

  1. Sign in to the Power BI.
  2. Click on Workspaces and click on the workspace you named.
  3. Click on the report or dashboard you looking for.
  4. You can get the Report ID/Dashboard ID from URL.

Embed Power BI Report without a toolbar

To show the Power BI Report as a full screen without a toolbar, you can use ?rs:embed=true after the report name as shown below :

Install and configure Power BI Report Server Prerequisites

Before we getting started to Install and configure Power BI Report Server, you prepare the below prerequisites:


  • Make sure that the SQL Server has been installed and configured on the database server before installing the Power BI Report Server. (It’s strongly recommended to install the Power BI report server in a separate server, not in the same database server)
  • Make sure that the DB server is reachable from the Power BI Report Server. (Please, check How to Check SQL Server Instance Connectivity from the application server to the database server.)
  • Install and Configure the Web Server (IIS) role on the Power BI Report Server.
  • Download the Power BI Report Server.
  • Download SQL Server 2017 Management Studio.
  • The license key for Power BI Report Server.
  • Make sure that the installation account is a member of the Local Administrator Group.
  • Make sure that the user used to configure the Power BI Report Server have access, run script, and create database permission on the Database Server.

Install Power BI Report Server Step by Step

  1. Download the latest Power BI Report Server version.
  2. Install the downloaded file.
  3. In Welcome Page, Click on Install Power BI Report Server.
  4. Choose one of the free Power BI Report Server Editions or provide the Power BI Report Server key.
  5. Check I accept the license terms, then press Next.
  6. By default, the Install Power BI Report Server Only option is selected, but after the installation, you will need to have a database instance to configure the Power BI Report Server Database.
  7. Specify the installation location of the Power BI Report Server.
  8. The Power BI Report Server should be now ready to start the installation process.

Power BI Report Server – Known Issues

We couldn’t run the report because we couldn’t connect to its data source

  1. Open Power BI Report Server Web Portal.
  2. Click on the report Eclipse … > Manage.
  3. From the right menu, select Data sources.
  4. Provide the login data (Username, Password) again in a correct manner.
  5. Click on Save.
  6. Browse the report that would be now working properly.


HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable.

Reason

  • The Power BI Report Server service is stopped.
  • The Power BI Report Server service Account is disabled or its password expired.
  • The Power BI Report Server service account is not configured properly.
  • The Power BI Report Server is not configured properly.


Solution

  • Make sure report server service account password is not expired and it's not disabled.
  • Make sure Power Bi Report Server service is running. (Restart / Start the service if it was stopped.)


You are not allowed to view this folder

  • Make sure that the SSRS account that will manage the SSRS is a member of this Local Administrator Group.
  • Add the SSRS Report Manager URL to Local Intranet Zone.
  • Add group or user to SQL Server Reporting Service and assign a role.

Power BI Report Server Software Requirements

  • The Power BI Report Server installation is only supported on 64x.
  • The supported SQL Server Versions (SQL Server 2012 to SQL Server 2019).
  • The Power Power BI Report Server requires .Net framework 4.7 to be installed.
  • The Power Power BI Report Server is supported on (Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2019, Windows 8, and Windows 10).
